They answered the call

This page will eventually link to individuals and their stories. Please email richard@shipleyww1.org if you have any information about people from Shipley and the surrounding area whose lives were affected by WWI.

So far we have just one story, that of Charles Houlden, a keen gardener and volunteer Frontiersman, kindly supplied by Ian Watson, his great nephew.

And the remarkable story of George Mitchell, son of a Bradford mill owner and nephew of Shipley MP Percy Illingworth, who once challenged world champion Georges Carpentier to a fight and won his bet.

Meanwhile I'm grateful to Andy Wade of the Men of Worth site that covers WWI from the point of view of Keighley for sharing these other photos he has captured from The Keighley News. Are any of them related to you? Can you help tell their stories?
