Frank Holmes Armitage
“I have such a lot to tell you and if
only time would permit I could sit
down and write a book about all I
have seen since I left dear old
England.”
Frank Holmes Armitage was a
prolific letter writer during the war
and fortunately for us, his parents
passed on several of his descriptions
of his experiences to the local paper
so we can still read them today.
These are not battle scenes but
mainly the impressions of a young
man seeing parts of the world he had
never imagined visiting
Rather than cram them all on to one
page, you can read the individual
pieces via the links on he right
Pte Armitage joined the RAMC in January and was trained at Leeds and
Aldershot.
He is of the ‘old boys’ of the Shipley Church Lads’ Brigade and whilst
camping at Bridlington in June 1911 he had the honour of being one of the
four sergeants sent to London to represent the CLV at the King’s Coronation.
