Joseph Barraclough
Pte Joseph Barraclough of 71 Tong
Park, Baildon, enlisted in the West
Yorkshire Regiment in 1915. After
training at Belle Vue barracks he
was drafted to France in July.
He has experienced much hard
fighting and unfortunately was
wounded on January 27th this year,
receiving the worst wounds about
his eyes.
He is reported to be progressing
favourably and is now an inmate of
the Second War Hospital,
Northfield, Birmingham.

A striking story of family
patriotism comes from the Baildon
district. Mrs Barraclough, a widow
of 73 Tong Park, has lost a third
son in the war. He is Pte Joe
Barraclough, Royal Defence Corps,
whose wife and child live at 71
Tong Park.
He was lost on the Leinster while
coming home on leave. He was 28
years of age.
In a letter to the deceased’s wife, a
captain says: “Pte Barraclough was
one of a party of 18 men who were
going home on leave and all were
lost. His death is keenly felt by the
whole company.”
Two years ago he had an eye blown
out and met with a compound
fracture of the skull.
He had been employed by Fyfe &
Kemp, lime and coal merchants, of
Otley Road, Shipley, previous to
enlisting at the outbreak of war.
The other two brothers who have
fallen also enlisted. They were Pte
Fred W Barraclough, aged 29, who
died of heatstroke in Salonika on
7th July 1916 and Cpl Herbert
Barraclough who was killed on the
same day.
A grandson of Mrs Barraclough,
Pte Ernest Hird, aged 22, was killed
on 18th April 1918.
