The fourth son of Mrs Barraclough of 73 Tong Park, Baildon, has just joined the forces. Two of them, Pte F W Barraclough and Pte Herbert Barraclough, have already given their lives for their country, and a third son, Pte Joseph Barraclough, has been severely wounded and is now in hospital in Sheffield. Pte Willie, the latest to join the colours, is in training in Durham. He is well-known in Shipley where until recently he was a vendor of newspapers. Shipley Times & Express 6 July 1917 Willie became a victim of the flu epidemic that swept Britain at the end of the war. He died in hospital in Hartlepool and was buried at Windhill Cemetery. He was the fourth of Eliza Barraclough’s sons to die and she also lost her grandson, Ernest Hird.
I am grateful to Freda Humpherson for supplying me with information and photographs of the four Barraclough brothers
