Benjamin Barrett
On 9 February 1917, the Shipley Times & Express reported:
Gunner Benjamin Barrett of Cavendish Road, Idle, has been killed in action.
The deceased hero was well-known and highly respected. He was the eldest son
of Mr James Barrett, of Woodbine Terrace, and he leaves a widow and one child,
two years of age.
Gunner Barrett joined the forces soon after the outbreak of war and had been in
France over a year.
Previously he was in the employment of J V Goodwin and Co Ltd, Bradford.
By his death the Baptist cause has lost a devoted worker, he having served the
Church and school in many capacities.
He was a valued member of the choir of which he was secretary and he held a
similar post in connection with the Young Men’s Class.
He was particularly smart in several directions. For a few years he was a
member of the shorthand class at the Thorpe Evening School and during the
whole of that time he was the cleverest student.
He was also an excellent swimmer and he won a prize for proficiency in that art.
He was 28 years of age.
