Arthur Bather
Arthur was the son of Thomas and
Margaret Bather of 1 Adelaide
Street, Woodbottom, Baildon. He
was born on 21st January 1889.
Sometime after the 1911 census, he
emigrated to Canada where he
worked as a Chauffeur before
enlisting in the Canadian Overseas
Expeditionary Force on 14th July
1915.
He travelled to France from Halifax
Pennsylvania aboard the SS
Lapland on 27th November 1915.
He was a Private in 19th Battalion.
Arthur sadly died in hospital in
Boulogne from gunshot wounds to
his left arm on 22/9/16, he was 27
years old. His is buried in
Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
The following report appeared in
the Shipley Times & Express on 20
October 1916
Pte Arthur Bather, Canadian
Infantry, fourth son of Mr and Mrs
Tom Bather of 1 Adelaide Street,
Woodbottom, Baildon, recently
died of wounds at the 15th General
Hospital, Boulogne.
Previous to the war he was an
employee of Messrs Parkinson &
Sons, Shipley. He has two brothers
in the army, Gunner Edward Bather
and Pte Nat Bather.
The following month, the local
paper reported a ‘very largely
attended’ memorial service held at
St Peter’s Church, Woodbottom, for
local men who had fallen.
‘Appropriate hymns were sung by
the choir and the Dead March in
Saul was impressively rendered by
Mr George Shaw, organist.
‘The names of those from Baildon
Woodbottom who have made the
supreme sacrifice are Arthur
Bather, Leonard Wildman, Levi
Hall, Willie Hall, William Peel,
Arthur Howetson, Harold Jones
and George Tarrant.’
