Charles Berry
Pte Charles Berry of the 8th Duke of Wellington’s Regt was
killed in action in the Dardanelles. He had been at the front for
six months.
Pte Berry was 30 years old, lived at 156 Union Street, Shipley
and worked at Charlestown Combing Company before enlisting.
He left a widow and young son.
Pte W S Capp wrote to his wife and said: ‘I deeply regret to have
to inform you of your husband’s death which occurred on
October 14th.
‘He was struck on the head by a piece of shell and death was
instantaneous.
‘We were mates together and had promised each other that if one
was killed the other would inform his comrade’s parents.
‘Allow me to offer you my deepest sympathy in your hour of
sorrow. If there is anything more you wish to know I will do my
best to tell you.’
