John William Brook
We first read of John in
an article in the Shipley
Times & Express on 15
February 1918 about
the Golden Wedding
celebrations of his in-
laws Mr and Mrs
Abraham Powell. The
article mentions that he
had been missing since
3 May 1916.
The newspaper
corrected an error in the
date the following
month when they published:
Cpl John William Brook, West
Yorkshire Regt, 41a Briggate,
Shipley, who was
reported missing on
3rd May 1917, is now
officially reported to
have died on that date.
Twenty-seven years
old, he enlisted in
August 1914 and
leaves a wife.
He was employed at
Ripley’s, Bradford, and
was the son-in-law of
Mr and Mrs Abraham
Powell, who celebrated
their gold wedding at Shipley a few
weeks ago.
And confirmation came in an
article on 4 April 1919, though the
earlier piece had clearly been
forgotten
A returned prisoner of war brings
the sad news that Cpl J W Brook,
West Yorkshire Regt, formerly of
41a Briggate and whose mother
now lives at 3 Jane Hills, Shipley,
was killed in action on 3rd May
1917.
He was posted as missing on that
date in the first place and until the
returned prisoner brough
information, the fate of Cpl Brook
has been unknown for nearly two
years.
