On 25 August 1916, the Shipley
Times & Expresse included the
following in a caption under the
photos of fallen local men:
“Private John Brown, son of Mrs
Steel of 4 Murgatroyd Place,
Windhill, has been killed in action.
“He enlisted in June 1915 and
went to France about three months
ago.
“Formerly he was employed at
the works of the Charlestown
Woolcombing Company.”
The Commonwealth War Grave
site lists a Pte John Brown from
the West Yorkshire Regt, killed
on 1 July 1916 and noted on the
Thiepval Memorial, but with such
a common name it is impossible
to be sure it is the same man.
