William Henry Copley
William was born around 1899, the son of William and Margaret Ann. At
the time of the 1911 census they were living at 3 Bridge Street, Shipley
with Margaret’s widowed father, Henry Wells.
On 13 September 1918, the Shipley Times & Express reported:
Pte W H Copley, East Yorks Regt, of 3 Bridge Street, Shipley, is in
hospital at Rouen with wounds in the head.
Two weeks later they wrote:
Pte W H Copley, East Yorks Regt, aged 19, son of Mr and Mrs William
Copley of 3 Bridge Street, Shipley, died on 18th September, in an
overseas hospital, of a fractured skull received in action 22 days
previously.
He worked for the Charlestown Combing Co and enlisted in August 1917,
going to the front last April.
