Harry Crowther
We learn far less about Harry’s war than we do of
his older brother Ernest, the first mention coming
on 26 March 1915 in the Shipley Times &
Express:
‘Cpl Crowther’s brother, Harry, who used to be a
worker at the Parish Church Sunday School, is in
the 2nd West Riding Brigade of the Royal Field
Artillery, now stationed at Bawtry, near
Doncaster.’
On 19 November 1915, we read:
‘Gunner Harry Crowther, of the Royal Field
Artillery, has been in France since April and he
has seen a good deal of fighting.
‘More than once he has been thrown on his back by the concussion on
the explosion of a big German shell.
‘Harry was formerly a zealous worker in connection with the Idle Parish
Church Sunday School where he made a large circle of friends.
Previously he did some excellent work at the Eccleshill Parish Church
Sunday School.’
A report of 17 October 1917 that Pte Ernest Longee of Idle was in
hospital in France contained the information:
‘In the same hospital, he says, is Gunner Harry Crowther, son of Mr A
Crowther. Gunner Crowther has been “gassed” and his sight has been
affected.’
