Gilbert’s military record gives his parents as Alfred Hudson Dawson and Mary Ann of Windhill, but in both the 1901 and 1911 census records he is living with the Miller family. In 1911 it is at 10 Russell Street, Windhill, with is aunt Maria Miller and her daughter Ann Eliza and Gilbert is a worsted spinner. The only mention of Gilbert’s war was this badly damaged photograph which appears in a gallery of local servicemen with just the caption, ‘drowned.’ He was one 14 casualties when the SS Normandy was torpedoed east of Cap de la Hague.
