John was the eldest of four children of John and Mary Jane Dean. At the time of the 1911 census they were living at 25 Piccadilly, Shipley. John snr is described as a boatman, carrying coal, while John jnr is a worsted spinner. On 19 October 1917 the Shipley Times & Express reported: Mrs Dean of 12 Wellington Street, Windhill, has received official news that her son, Pte John Dean, 20, single, who joined the army in November last, is missing. Before the war Pte Dean was a carter, employed by John Wade. He has been in France about five months. Pte Dean’s brother, Arthur, 18, is in training at Clipstone Camp. It is now known that John was killed the day he went missing
