Doncaster-born John was still living in his home town in 1911 along with his wife Harriet and children. He was working as carriage painter on the railway but at some stage before the war moved to Shipley where he went into a window-cleaning partnership with James Gott. On 15 November 1918, the Shipley Times & Express reported: Pte John Thomas Gaunt, whose wife and two children live at 39 Earl Street, Shipley, was killed by a stray shell on 24th October. He had been a window cleaner in partnership with the late Mr James Henry Gott of 9 Windsor Road, Shipley, who was killed in action last March.
