Herbert Hardcastle
Pte Herbert Hardcastle, who enlisted in East Yorkshire Regiment in June
1916, of 17 Lynthorne Road, Frizinghall, has died a prisoner of war. He
was 24 years of age and had been a prisoner since 3rd May 1917.
The information is conveyed in a letter from Mr I Wilkinson of Market
Harborough, who writes: “It is with the utmost regret I have to tell you
that Pte Hardcastle died in hospital at a small town in East Prussia on 21st
November.
“I and two comrades happened to hear an Englishman was ill so we called
at the hospital to see but he had died the evening before after a very short
illness.
“He had no correspondence with him except the few photographs I
enclose and all the information we could get was that his home was in
Bradford.
“When we arrived at Heilsberg, preparatory to being sent home, we
managed to get the address to which I now write. I am indeed sorry to be
the bearer of such sad news.”
