At the time of the 1911 census James was the only son among the five surviving children of the nine born to James William and Ann. They were living at 17 Baden Street, Haworth. He was 13 years old and described as a bobbin carrier. James was one of the thousands of men killed fighting in the battle of the Somme and his death was reported in the Shipley Times & Express on 11 August 1916: Pte J R Harrison of 42 St Paul’s Road, Shipley and of the Duke of Wellington’s Regt, has been killed in action. He was twice previously wounded and gassed. He is the son of Mr J W Harrison, late of the Royal Marines.
