Arthur Hewitson
Arthur Hewitson was one of the men wounded during the battle of the Somme who was brought back to England for treatment. But as we learn from the Shipley Times & Express of 13 October 1916, “Pte Arthur Hewitson, only son of Mrs Hewitson, Wellfield, Baildon, died on September 29th at the Gosforth War Hospital, Newcastle, from wounds received in action on September 16th. “Pte Hewitson, who was 30 years of age, was married a few months ago to the younger daughter of Mr John Whitaker of Park Mount Avenue, Baildon. “He was a prominent member of the Wellfield Moravian Church, Woodbottom, a member of the Baildon Golf Club and Baildon Green Cricket Club. “His death came as a great shock to a large number of friends and at his funeral, which took place on Monday week at Charlestown Cemetery, representatives attended from each of those associations as a token of the esteem and high regard in which he has been held in the district.”
Arthur’s family posted a notice in the newspaper the day after he died
