William Arthur Holgate
On 15 June 1917, the Shipley Times & Express
reported:
Sgt W A Holgate of the Canadian Expeditionary
Force was recently killed in action.
Sgt Holgate who previously resided with his sister,
Mrs W Brook, at Browgate Baildon and was in the
employ of G C Waud of Ferniehurst, emigrated to
Canada in 1913 and joined the Canadian Army
soon after the outbreak of war.
He went to France in August 1915 and had been
wounded twice, meeting his death in action on
May 23rd. He was 25 years of age.
Mrs Brook, with whom the deepest sympathy will be felt, was recently the
recipient of a letter from Capt D G Ross, chaplain of the battalion, in
which he says:
“I deeply regret to inform you that your brother has been killed in action.
He was out with a working party and a shell burst near them, killing two
and wounding some others.
“I beg to convey to you my sorrow. Your brother was one of the originals
of the battalion and was held in much esteem by the officers of his
company.
“Quite a number of his comrades managed to be at the funeral service.”
