George Douglas Holmes
George Douglas Holmes was the
son of Henry Bradford Holmes.
Henry was born 6 February 1866 in
Bradford. Working as a wool sorter
he married Frances Isabella Smith
17 January 1885 at St Wilfrid
Calverley. Henry was imprisoned
for ten days in August 1900 for
assaulting his wife.
George, the fifth of nine children,
was born 28 November 1889 in
Baildon. He was baptised 1 June
1890 at Baildon Parish Church. In
1911 the family were living at 53
Carr Lane in Windhill.
George married Eliza Beatrice
Charvell 26 July 1915 at Bradford
Registry Office. They had a
daughter, Irene, born 29 June 1916.
George enlisted 20 November 1915
and he was held in reserve until he
was mobilised 26 April 1916. He
served as a Private with the 12th
Battalion Durham Light Infantry
and he was posted to France 25
July 1916. George died 31 August
1916 and he was buried in Tancrez
Farm Cemetery in Belgium.
George is remembered on the Rolls
of Honour at Nab Wood and
Windhill Parish Church.

Pte George Douglas Holmes, 26
years of age, of the Durham Light
Infantry, was killed in action in
France on August 3rd.
His home was 56 Barkerend Road,
Bradford, formerly of Windhill. He
was a member of the Windhill
Parish Church choir for over 15
years and a member of the football
and cricket clubs.
He was the son of Henry Bradford
Holmes, Baildon, and the great-
grandson of the late Thomas
Bradford, proprietor of the
Bradford old stage coach,
Undercliffe.
