John Jones
John Jones was born in 1883 the
second of three children of fish
hawker William Edwin Jones and
Sarah Jane, nee Gummersall.
Records for this family are scant
and by 1911 John is married with a
family and living at 53 Moody
Street.
In 1904 he married Bridget
Maloney and they had two
children, Nellie born 1905 and John
William in 1911. Their third child
Louis was born in 1915.
At the time of the census John’s
sister Sarah Emma was living with
the family and John was working as
a greengrocer on his own account.
John enlisted on the 12th
November 1916 as Private 242646
in the 1/6th Battalion of the West
Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of
Wales Own).
This battalion formed part of the
West Riding 49th Division. They
took part in the the third German
offensive known as the Battle of
the Lys 9th April to the 29th April
1918 which was initially
successful but the attack was held
after British and French reserves
were found.
The Battle of Bailleul took place on
the 13th to 15th of April and John
survived this only to be killed on
the first day of the second Battle of
Kemmel on the 25th to 26th of
April. He was 34 years of age.
He is remembered on the Tyne Cot
Memorial
John left his effects to his widow
Bridget and children who on the
11th of June 1919 received
£14.0.5d which included his War
Gratuity of £9.10s.
