George William Jowett
George was one of thousands of men killed during the battle of the
Somme and his death was reported in the Shipley Times & Express on 18
August 1916:
Pte G W Jowett, grandson of Mr G W Taylor of Morecambe and formerly
of Shipley, was wounded on the 2nd July. He joined the 7th East Yorks
Regt in September 1914 and was first wounded in April 1915, returning to
the front in April of this year.
He was formerly employed at the words of Messrs D Sowden & Sons,
loom makers, Shipley.
Sgt B Hargreaves of the same company writes: “It is with the deepest
regret that I write informing you of Pte Jowett’s death. His absence from
the ranks will be keenly felt by everyone who knew him. His dry humour
made men smile under the most trying circumstances.”
