John Joyce
John Joyce was born about 1893 one of 12 children of carpenter and
boatbuilder John Joyce and his wife Emily.
In 1901 the family were living at Canal Bank, Idle and by 1911 they were
at 6 Ash Grover, Greengates. At some point before the outbreak John jnr
married Louie Pawson
John enlisted on 19 November 1916 in the North Staffordshire Regt and
on 11 May 1917, the Shipley Times & Express reported: “Pte John Joyce,
Manchester Regt, of 28 New Street, Idle, has been killed in action. He
donned khaki about six months ago and it is about two months since he
went to France.
“He was a native of Greengates and before joining the forces was in the
employ of Harper & sons, Ravenscliffe Mills, Calverley.
“He married a daughter of Mr Alfred Pawson and leaves a widow and a
daughter in infancy.”
Later Louie married John Oates of Idle.
