Herbert Sebastian Kilner
Herbert Sebastian Saville Kilner was born in Bradford around 1879, one of
eight children of music professor James Kilner and his wife Elizabeth.
By the time of the 1911 census he was working as a postman in Idle,
bording with widow Jane Patrick and her family at 4 Hampton Place
though by the time of his death in 1916 his address is given as Thorp
Garth, Idle.
Dialect columnist Bob Stubbs paid tribute to Herbert on hearing of his
death:
One o’ t’Idle postmen – Herbert Kilner – he’s been killed in action, an’
with him bein’ a public man in a sense he wor varry weel knawn an’tnews
ov his death it fair seemed to come as a shock to them at knew him.
Herbert wor a cheerful postman and it’s hard to see sitch grand young men
as him taken away.
