Redford was born in Shipley in 1894. His father was John Henry, a quarryman born in Hardcastle, who signed the 1911 census with an X. His mother was Esther Ann from Howden Dyke. The couple appear to have moved to Shipley before 1892 when their son John Willie was born. On 6 December 1918 the Shipley Times & Express reported: Mr and Mrs Marshall of 10 Wycliffe Place, Saltaire Road, Shipley have lost a third son in the war. He is Pte Redford Marshall, Lancashire Fusiliers, aged 24, who was killed in action on 2nd October. Previous to enlisting four years ago he was employed by the Valley Scouring Company.
