Ernest Shackleton Metcalfe
Bombardier Ernest Shackleton Metcalfe, 6 Wrose Hill, has been killed in
action. The deceased was 32 years of age and was called to the colours as
a reservist on the outbreak of war. His period of service expired in April of
last year and he joined up again in September of the same year.
He is survived by a widow and three children, of which the eldest is six
years of age. Before the war he was employed at Shaw’s dyeworks.
Driver J Blatchford writes: “From the day he joined our battalion
everyone seemed to take to him. He had such winning ways that he
attracted people to him. Furthermore he was one of the best soldiers we
ever had and we are all very sorry to lose him.”
According to a letter from Lieut Rigby, Bombardier Metcalfe was hit by a
shell and death was instantaneous. “As his section officer, I cannot speak
too highly of him. He was a splendid soldier and so cheery under all
circumstances.”
