Jesse Mitchell
Great sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs
Thomas Mitchell in the loss of their eldest
son, Pte Jesse Mitchell, West Yorks Regt.
Mrs Mitchell, who lives at 12 Binswell Fold,
recently received a letter from a Presbyterian
chaplain saying that he was with her son just
before he passed away and that he sent this
message: βI am keeping up as bravely I can.β
Then he asked: βis there any chance of getting
a Blighty just to see my dear mother? She is
suffering so terribly.β
Pte Mitchell was 22 years of age. Joining up
in May 1916, he trained at Blyth and went out
the following September.
He was wounded in November and returned
to the front in March. Contacting septic poisoning soon after his return, he
was in hospital for eight months. He was killed on 30th March.
His father, Pte T Mitchell, is serving with the R.G.A.
