Thomas James Mitchell
Thomas Mitchell was born in Wilsden in 1896, the son of local grocer Thomas and his Kent-born, schoolteacher wife Eliza. The family lived at 14 Main Street, Wilsden but appear to have moved to 14 Wensley Avenue, Shipley on the death of Thomas snr sometime between 1911 and 1916. Thomas jnr was one of those hundreds of men promoted to be a junior officer before their 21st birthday and like so many of them, he was killed leading his men into battle on the Somme, leading his family to place a notice in the Shipley Times & Express.
