Rufus Mortimer
Rufus was born around 1878 the son of William and Ann. In 1895 he
married Ann Elizabeth Jackson and the couple, who lived just down the
road from Rufus’s family, had two children, Arthur and William.
On 24 May 1918, the Shipley Times & Express reported:
Pte Rufus Mortimer, a stretcher bearer in the West Yorks Regt, whose
wife lives at 32 Fairbank, Windhill, has won the Military medal for
carrying in wounded under heavy fire.
He joined up in October 1916, went to the front in January 1917, has
been wounded once and has been in hospital with septic poisoning.
He was connected with the Shipley Trades Hall.
On 6 December the newspaper reported:
Pte R Mortimer, West Yorkshire Regt, whose wife lives at 32 Fairbank,
Windhill, was shot through the heart by a machine gun bullet on 11th October.
He joined up in October 1916, went to the front in January 1917, won the Military Medal in
March 1918 and was later recommended for the bar.
He was employed at Short Bank Quarry, Skipton, for six years previous to joining up.
