Ernest was born around 1896, the son of Robert and Eliza with whom he was living at the time of the 1911 census. Ernest is listed as a doffer. On 12 July 1913 he married Alice Rhodes at Idle Parish Church and they had one child. On 11 May 1917, the Shipley Times & Express reported: Pte Ernest Pedley, Duke of Wellington’s Own Regt, whose wife and child live at 46 Hampton Place, has been wounded in the leg and is in hospital at Birmingham. After a few months’ training he went to the Continent last November. Formerly he worked at Ravenscliffe Mills, Calverley. On 26 July 1918, the paper carried this report: Pte Ernest Pedley, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regt., aged 22, whose wife and child live at 46 Hampton Place, Idle, has been missing since 27 November 1917. He joined the colours in August 1915, went to the front in early 1916 and was wounded about Whitsuntide 1917. He was a dyer at Harper’s, Calverley, and worked at the Idle Picture House at night. It was later confirmed that Ernest had been killed on that day.
