John Gillies Priestley
On 30 April 1915, the Shipley Times & Express reported:
“Lieut John Gillies Priestley, whose family lived at Cottingley Hall, was
awarded the military cross for gallantry and devotion to duty at Neuve
Chapelle.
“The citation read that he ‘continued attending on the wounded with great
gallantry although himself badly wounded.’
The paper followed up the story on 2 July:
“Lieut John Gillies Priestley, M.B. (formerly of Cottingley Hall), of the
Royal Army Medical Corps, who was mentioned in Sir John French’s
despatches last week, attended at Buckingham Palace on Monday and
received at the hands of the King the Military Cross awarded to him for
gallantry at Neuve Chapelle, when he was somewhat severely wounded.
“He has now recovered from his wounds and expects to rejoin his
regiment next week.
“Lieut Priestley is a nephew of Sir William Priestley, the MP for East
Bradford.”
