Meredith Rhodes
Gunner Meredith Rhodes, nephew of Mr and Mrs Albert Suttle of
Marlborough Road, Idle, with whom he resided, has died from the
effects of gas poisoning.
Gunner Rhodes, who was 24 years of age, has been in the army
for about two years.. He went to the Continent fifteen months ago
and had taken part in several important engagements.
The news that he had been badly gassed was read on Thursday last
and on the following day Mr Suttle started for France but while in
London on Friday, he was informed that his nephew had already
passed away.
Gunner Rhodes, having lost his parents, went to live with this
uncle and aunt and he had found them so affectionate that in his
letters home he referred to them as father and mother.
He was thoroughly convinced that all who go through the terrible experience of the war
will be changed men when they return. The train of this thinking may be gathered from
his statement that Christianity at home is a mockery compared to that which imbues the
men when they have to face death at the front.
He was formerly associated with the idle Baptist Church and Sunday School.
