Arthur Rossington
News of the death in action on 13th September of Sec-Lieut Arthur
Rossington, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regt, has been received by
his wife at 37 Clifton Place, Shipley.
The deceased was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Richard Rossington of
Girlington, and he was manager at Cooper Bros, general warehousemen
of Sunbridge Road, Bradford previous to enlisting under the Derby
scheme in February 1916.
He went to the front on Christmas Day 1916. He was promoted sergeant,
came home to train for his commission last August and was gazetted a
second-lieutenant in February of this year.
In a letter to the deceased’s wife his Lieut-Colonel says: “He was leading
his men in an attack when he was shot in the head by a sniper and
instantaneously killed. He did not suffer.”
The deceased was connected with the Shipley Parish Church and his
brother has been fighting in Salonica for the last three years.
