Arthur Sheard
On 31 May 1918 the Shipley Times & Express carried a brief heart-
breaking story on page 8 under the headline:
FATHER AND DAUGHTER BURIED AT THE SAME TIME.
“At Hirst Wood Cemetery recently the funeral took place with military
hours of Driver Arthur Sheard, RFA, of George Street, Saltaire, who died
in Morton Banks Military Hospital.
“The day following his death, his four-year old daughter succumbed and
the coffins were lowered into the grave at the same time.”
Arthur was born in 1888 in Cleckheaton, the fourth child of William and
Mary Ellen Sheard.
William died sometime before the 1891 census and on 18 April 1897,
Mary Ellen married Briggs Pinder, a sailor, which explains why he was
absent for the next two census returns.
In 1901 the family were still in Cleckheaton and 13-year-old Arthur is a
doffer; by 1911 they had moved to Saltaire and Arthur is described as a
warehouseman.
The following year, on 2 April, he married Lavinia Dennison in Windhill
Parish Church and Arthur is described as a shoemaker.
Hilda was born in January 1914.
Mary Ellen Pinder, was buried in the same grave on 3 September 1924
