John Stead
John Stead was born around 1892 in Idle, the second son among five
daughters of James and Mary Stead.
James was absent when the 1901 census was taken and dead by the time
of the 1911 census when Mary and seven of her children were living at 3
Highdale Road, Idle. John was 19 years old and described as a crabber.
We know very little of John’s military career in the RNVR. On 11 January
1918, the Shipley Times & Express gave a very brief account of his death:
John Stead of Royal Naval Division, son of Mrs Stead of Highdale
Terrace, Idle, has been killed in action.
