In 1911 Edwin was living with his widowed mother, Florence, and his brother Frank at the home of his uncle, Amos Parsons. On 16 March 1916, the Shipley Times & Express reported: Edwin Amos Thomas, 23 years of age, second son of Mrs Thomas and nephew of Mr A Parsons, stationmaster, of Craiglands, Otley Road, Shipley, has been killed in action in Mesopotamia. Before joining the colours he was employed by the Midland Railway Company and was stationed at Holbeck.
