News has been received though not officially, that Pte Arthur Thornton,
Royal Leincaster Canadians, son of the late Mr Charles Thornton of
Bradford Road, has been killed in action.
Pte Thornton, who was 24 years of age, joined the forces early this year
and had been in France for about two months.
According to the intelligence which has been received from his comrade,
Pte Thornton’s death was instantaneous.
Before the war, the deceased hero was a baker. He was married and his
widow resides in Albion Road.
His brother, Pte Hubert Thornton, of the Labour Battalion, is in France
and another brother, Mr Jesse Thornton, is to don khaki today.
Pte Edgar Cordingley, brother of Mrs Arthur Thornton, has been wounded
