Sydney was the fourth of six children, all born in Shipley, of Staveley-
born William Thornton and his wife Mary Elizabeth who had been born in
Deptford, London.
Judging by the age of their eldest child, Hetty, the couple had moved to
Shipley sometime in the late 1880s.
