Leslie F Walker
On 4 October 1918 the Shipley Times & Express reported:
“Sec Lieut Leslie F Walker, only son of Mr and Mrs F Walker, who until
recently resided at Church Hill, Baildon, has been awarded the Military
Cross for good leadership and great gallantry during an attack on 22nd
July.
“His platoon, becoming disorganised through heavy casualties from
hostile machine gun fire, he called his men and rushed the post himself
leading, capturing four machine guns and twelve prisoners, his personal
example certainly saving the situation.
“Sec Lieut Walker, who is 21 years of age, joined the Gordon Highlanders
as a private in February 1915. He gained his commission in September
1917 and was then posted to the West Yorkshire Regt.
“He has been wounded three times and is now in hospital in Birmingham
but making a good recovery.
“He attended the Primitive Methodist Sunday School and was a member
of the choir.”
