Ernest Wood
Ernest Wood was born in 1893 in Fagley the son of John William and
Alice (surname not known as marriage not found).
Little is known about this family but when Ernest enlisted they were
living at 5 Haigh Farm, Moorside Road.
Ernest enlisted as Private 9625 in ‘D’ Company of the 1st Battalion of the
West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own).
This Battalion was a regular army battalion and at the outbreak of war it is
likely that Ernest was a serving member.
Nothing is known about his war service but he died from pneumonia on
the 26th of October 1919 in Peshawar, India. He was 26 years of age.
He is buried in the Peshawar British Cemetery in the North West Frontier
where the British had been buried for centuries and he is remembered on
the Delhi (India Gate) Memorial.
He left his effects to his father John William who received £61.19.6d on
the 3rd November 1920.
